Five for Freedom / Storyboard

Five for Freedom / Storyboard

Finally there’s a storyboard for the fifth loop “Five for Freedom”. There was another version before but it was rather abstract and I didn’t like it at all. It never really fit into the series of loops. Now there’s a story of animals trapped on a hill and a dancer trapped in a birdcage becoming as free as a bird.

In the first picture of the storyboard (remember, a loop has not really a start and an end) we see a dancer trapped in a birdcage performing her pirouettes. And we see a tricksy cat sneaking of the scene (1). The camera zooms in on the dancer which reflects itself in the mirror of the birdcage (2). The mirror image of the dancer transforms into a magpie and flies of into the mirrored sky (2-3). The camera follows the bird through the mirror (5). The magpie flies over a hilly landscape. On each hill is a house or a tree (6). On one of the hills is a group of animals standing close together. They’re trapped on the steep hill (7). The magpie sees something glittery flash on between the animals: It’s a little mirror in a birdcage which the giraffe is keeping in her mouth (7+8). The magpie flies towards the birdcage and sits down in front of the mirror (9+10). The very same moment as the tricksy cat closes the door of the birdcage the magpie transforms into a ballerina (11). Now the dancer is trapped in the birdcage and performs her pirouettes (12). ∞

In “Five for Freedom” we see the opposite of the immobile animals and the agile dancer respectively magpie. This somehow should reflect in the design and animation of this loop. It’s a very artistic circus like scene and therefore colour will be very important. In the moodboard I collected some inspirational pictures of animals (mainly by amazing artist Charley Harper) as well as pictures with great colour palette and texture examples.
